Christchurch aims to be the safest city in New Zealand

Christchurch City Council has teamed up with central and local government bodies, the Police, local iwi and community organisations to focus on making the city a safer place to live, work, play and learn.
The new Safer Christchurch Strategy, launched last night, will mean a unified approach to crime prevention, injury prevention and road safety.

City celebrates opening of Antarctic summer season

Christchurch is going all out this year to mark the opening of the Antarctic Summer Season and show the importance of Antarctica to the city.
From 1-9 October, there will be a feast of Antarctic related activities including exhibitions showcasing Antarctica?s stunning landscape, talks on what it?s like to live on the ice, presentations on scientific discoveries, the Hagglund Charity Challenge and a raft of kids? activities.

Snow falling in Christchurch

Canterbury was this morning in the grip of a cold snap with snow falling to nearly sea level in places with the southerly chill predicted to spread up the country this evening.
Snow was even falling at Christchurch Airport, MetService lead forecaster Paul Bruce said today.

Upgrade for Christchurch airport
Plans for a $200-million upgrade of Christchurch's domestic and international airports have been unveiled.
They will see both airports combined to provide a hub for air travel in the South Island. International Airport Company chairman Syd Bradley says the development will be the largest and most complex project in the Canterbury region for two decades.

Court decision will make settlements harder
Christchurch City Council believes an Employment Court decision imposing a blanket ban on any communications by an employer to staff during bargaining will make future agreements harder to reach.
